AC vs DC Power: Why Your Inverter Converts Both

AC vs DC power, simply: DC (direct current) flows in one direction at a steady voltage, and it is what batteries and solar panels produce. AC (alternating current) reverses direction many times a second; in India it reverses at 50 Hz at a nominal 230V, and it is what your wall sockets and most appliances use. A home inverter sits between the two. It converts mains AC to DC to charge the battery, then converts battery DC back to AC during a power cut. Each conversion loses some energy, which is part of why real backup is shorter than the battery label suggests.
AC and DC at a glance
DC (direct current) | AC (alternating current) | |
|---|---|---|

Used by | Electronics internally, LED drivers, EVs | Fans, fridges, ACs, wall sockets |
Easy to step voltage up or down | Needs electronics | Yes, with a simple transformer |
Can be stored | Yes, in batteries | No, must be converted to DC first |
Difference between AC and DC
The difference between AC and DC is the direction of current. In DC, electrons move steadily one way, like water in a pipe flowing downhill. In AC, they shuffle back and forth, 50 complete cycles every second in India.
AC won the grid because its voltage can be raised and lowered with a transformer. Power is sent long distances at very high voltage (low current, low losses) and stepped down to 230V near your home. DC, however, is the only form a battery can store.
Myth 1: "My appliances run on AC, so DC is useless at home"
Not quite. Most modern electronics run on DC inside. Your phone charger, laptop adapter, LED bulb driver and TV power supply all convert 230V AC to low-voltage DC before the electronics use it. Inverter ACs and BLDC fans also convert AC to DC internally to control their motors.
So a typical home converts power many times: AC from the grid, DC inside the gadget. The plug looks AC; the electronics are DC.
AC and DC current examples in your home
Device | What comes in | What it uses inside |
|---|---|---|
Ceiling fan (ordinary induction) | AC | AC |
BLDC fan | AC | DC (motor driven electronically) |
LED bulb | AC | DC (via driver) |
Phone and laptop chargers | AC | DC output |
Inverter battery | DC | DC |
Solar panel | Sunlight | DC output |
Refrigerator (non-inverter) | AC | AC |
Inverter AC | AC | DC (compressor drive) |
Myth 2: "The inverter just switches over to the battery"
An inverter does far more than switch. Its name comes from its main job: inverting DC into AC. Here is why inverter converts DC to AC, and what happens at each stage:
- Mains present: the inverter's charger converts 230V AC into roughly 13.7 to 14.4V DC to charge a 12V battery. Exide's published Inverterz Star specification, for example, lists a 14.4V boost voltage and a 13.7V trickle voltage.
- Power cut: the inverter draws DC from the battery and electronically builds a 50 Hz AC waveform, stepping it up through a transformer to around 220 to 230V. The same Exide specification lists output of 220V ±7V at 50 Hz ±1 Hz.
- Mains returns: it switches the load back to the grid and resumes charging.
Each stage loses energy as heat, typically 10 to 20% on the DC-to-AC side. That loss is one reason the realistic backup calculation in our companion guide to Ah capacity multiplies by about 0.85.
Myth 3: "Solar panels give electricity I can plug straight in"
Is solar power AC or DC? Solar panels produce DC. To run household appliances or feed the grid, that DC must go through an inverter.
- On-grid systems convert panel DC straight to grid-matching AC, with no battery. The full component path, from panel to inverter to net meter, is laid out in our on-grid solar system diagram.
- Off-grid and hybrid systems store DC in batteries and convert to AC on demand. A hybrid inverter manages panels, battery and grid together; our hybrid inverter vs normal inverter guide compares the two.
Myth 4: "All inverter AC is the same as mains AC"
It is not. Grid AC is a smooth sine wave. Cheaper inverters build a rougher approximation.
Pure sine wave vs square wave inverter
Pure sine wave | Modified / square wave | |
|---|---|---|
Output shape | Smooth, matches grid | Stepped or square |
Fan noise | Normal | Often a hum or buzz |
Motors and compressors | Run cool and efficient | Run hotter, less efficient |
Sensitive electronics | Safe | Can malfunction or buzz |
Price | Higher | Lower |
Recommendation | Homes with fridges, BLDC fans, computers | Basic lights-and-fans only |
For most Indian homes today, pure sine wave is worth the extra cost. Fridges, inverter appliances, BLDC fans and computers all behave better on it. The same applies to UPS units; our 1kVA UPS guide explains the online, line-interactive and offline types.
Myth 5: "DC is safer than AC, so battery wiring is harmless"
A 12V battery will not give a dangerous shock, but it is far from harmless. It can deliver hundreds of amps in a short circuit, enough to melt a spanner, burn wiring and start a fire. Always connect battery terminals with insulated tools, positive first, and never let a metal tool bridge both terminals.
Mains AC at 230V is dangerous to touch. Leave anything on the AC side to a qualified electrician.
AC vs DC power: pros and cons
AC | DC | |
|---|---|---|
Advantages | Easy to transmit and step down; runs ordinary motors directly | Can be stored; native to solar and electronics |
Disadvantages | Cannot be stored | Harder to change voltage; needs inverter for home use |
Conversion cost | AC to DC: charger losses | DC to AC: inverter losses |
What this means for your buying decision
Strong fit for a pure sine wave inverter: any home with a fridge, BLDC fans, a computer or medical equipment.
Marginal fit for a square wave inverter: a few lights and ordinary fans only, on a tight budget.
Plan for conversion loss: add 15 to 20% to your energy estimate when sizing battery backup.
FAQs
What is the difference between AC and DC?
DC flows one way at steady voltage, as from a battery. AC reverses direction many times a second; in India at 50 Hz and a nominal 230V. Batteries store DC; homes are wired for AC.
Why does an inverter convert DC to AC?
Batteries can only store DC, but household appliances and wiring are designed for 230V AC. The inverter converts battery DC into a 50 Hz AC supply during a power cut.
Is solar power AC or DC?
Solar panels produce DC. An inverter converts it to AC for home use or for export to the grid.
What is the standard AC supply in India?
India's standard household supply is 230V at 50 Hz. Actual voltage varies with local grid conditions, which is why inverters and stabilisers accept a range around it.
Pure sine wave vs square wave inverter: which should I buy?
Pure sine wave, for most homes. It runs fridges, BLDC fans and electronics cleanly and quietly. Square wave suits only basic lighting and ordinary fans.
What are some AC and DC current examples at home?
AC: wall sockets, ordinary ceiling fans, non-inverter fridges. DC: inverter batteries, solar panels, phone and laptop charger outputs, LED drivers.
How much power is lost converting DC to AC?
Typically 10 to 20% in a home inverter, depending on its efficiency and load. Check the efficiency figure on your inverter's datasheet.
Is a 12V DC battery dangerous?
It will not give a serious shock, but a short circuit across its terminals can release hundreds of amps, burn wiring and cause a fire. Use insulated tools.
Conclusion
AC vs DC power is not a contest; your home needs both. Batteries and solar panels deal in DC, the grid and your sockets deal in AC, and the inverter translates between them, losing a little energy each way. Knowing that helps you choose a pure sine wave inverter, size backup realistically, and handle battery wiring with the respect it deserves.
