Amp vs Ah vs Watt: Battery Units Made Simple

Amp vs Ah vs Watt, in one sentence each: an amp (A) is how fast current flows right now, an ampere-hour (Ah) is how much charge a battery can store, and a watt (W) is how much power an appliance uses at any moment. Add the time dimension to watts and you get watt-hours (Wh), which is the real measure of stored energy, and 1,000 of them make the "unit" on your electricity bill. Mix these up and you will buy the wrong battery, the wrong inverter, or both.
The four units at a glance
Unit | Symbol | What it measures | Everyday example |
|---|---|---|---|
Ampere | A | Rate of current flow, right now | A ceiling fan draws about 0.3A at 230V |
Ampere-hour | Ah | Charge stored or used over time | A home inverter battery stores 150Ah |
Watt | W | Power, right now | That same fan uses about 70W |
Watt-hour | Wh | Energy over time | A 150Ah, 12V battery holds 1,800 Wh |
Kilowatt-hour | kWh | 1,000 Wh, the billing "unit" | One unit on your electricity bill |
Amp vs Ah vs Watt: the water tank picture
Think of your battery as a rooftop water tank.
- Voltage (V) is the water pressure, set by how high the tank sits.
- Amps (A) are how fast water flows out of the tap right now.
- Ah is how much water the tank holds, measured as "flow rate × hours".
- Watts (W) are the actual work the water does per second: pressure multiplied by flow.
- Wh is the total work the full tank can do before it runs dry.
The picture explains the most common confusion straight away. Two tanks can hold the same "Ah" of water but do very different amounts of work if one sits much higher (higher voltage). That is why Ah alone cannot compare a 12V battery with a 24V or 48V one, and why Wh can.
Difference between amp and Ah
The difference between amp and Ah is the difference between speed and distance. Amps are a rate, like 60 km per hour. Ah is a quantity, like 60 km travelled.
Amp (A) | Ampere-hour (Ah) | |
|---|---|---|
Type of quantity | Rate | Amount |
Changes moment to moment? | Yes, with load | No, it is a capacity rating |
Where you see it | Charger output, MCB rating, appliance label | Battery label |
Example | Inverter charger pushes 15A | Battery holds 150Ah |
Relationship | Amps × hours = Ah | Ah ÷ hours = average amps |
A practical example: an inverter charging at 15A puts back roughly 15Ah every hour, before charging losses. Refilling a fully drained 150Ah battery therefore takes well over 10 hours in practice, which is why short mains windows leave batteries half-charged.
Watt vs watt hour
Watt vs watt hour follows the same rule. Watts are power right now; watt-hours are power multiplied by time.
- A 100W load running for 1 hour uses 100 Wh.
- A 100W load running for 10 hours uses 1,000 Wh, which is 1 kWh, one unit.
- A 1,000W iron running for 6 minutes (0.1 hour) also uses 100 Wh.
That last line is why a high-watt appliance is not automatically expensive to run. What matters on your bill and on your battery is watts multiplied by hours.
What is a unit of electricity?
What is a unit of electricity on your bill? One unit is one kilowatt-hour: 1,000 watts used for one hour. A fully charged 150Ah, 12V battery stores 1.8 units, before losses. Seen that way, a full battery holds less energy than many people expect: about what a 1.5 ton AC consumes in roughly an hour and a half of running.
How to convert Ah to watts
How to convert Ah to watts depends on what you actually want, because Ah and watts measure different things. You cannot convert a capacity into a rate directly. What you can do is the two useful calculations below.
You know | You want | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
Volts and amps | Watts (power) | W = V × A | 230V × 0.3A = 69W fan |
Volts and Ah | Wh (energy stored) | Wh = V × Ah | 12V × 150Ah = 1,800 Wh |
Watts and volts | Amps drawn | A = W ÷ V | 300W ÷ 12V = 25A from battery |
Wh and load watts | Hours of runtime | h = Wh ÷ W | 1,800 ÷ 300 = 6h (before losses) |
Wh | kWh (units) | kWh = Wh ÷ 1,000 | 1,800 Wh = 1.8 units |
The third row surprises people. A 300W load on the AC side pulls about 25A from a 12V battery, and more once inverter losses are added. That is why inverter battery cables are thick, and why the load calculation for an inverter always starts by adding up watts. The runtime row gives the theoretical figure; real backup is lower, as our companion guide on Ah capacity explains.
VA vs watt: the inverter rating trap
VA vs watt is where most inverter buying mistakes happen. Inverters and UPS units are sold in VA (volt-amperes), but your appliances use watts. The two differ by the power factor, which for home inverters typically sits around 0.7 to 0.8.
Inverter label | Approximate real watts (at 0.7 to 0.8 power factor) |
|---|---|
650 VA | 455 to 520 W |
900 VA | 630 to 720 W |
1,100 VA | 770 to 880 W |
1,500 VA | 1,050 to 1,200 W |
So an "1,100VA" inverter cannot run 1,100W of appliances. Plan your load against the watt figure, and leave headroom for motor start-up surges from fans, coolers and fridges. The full method sits in our inverter and battery sizing guide. A related naming muddle (kV versus kW) is untangled in 1kV solar panel vs 1kW explained.
Five unit mistakes and their cost
Mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
Comparing a 12V 150Ah battery with a 24V 100Ah battery by Ah | You pick the "bigger" number, which actually holds less energy (1,800 Wh vs 2,400 Wh) |
Treating VA as watts | Inverter overloads and trips when the cooler starts |
Thinking a high-watt appliance always costs more | You avoid a 1,000W iron used 10 minutes a day but leave a 60W fan on 14 hours (the fan uses more units) |
Reading charger amps as battery capacity | You expect a 15A charger to refill 150Ah in 10 hours; real time is longer |
Ignoring voltage on mobile power banks | A 10,000 mAh power bank at 3.7V is 37 Wh, a tiny fraction of an inverter battery |
Who needs to understand which unit
Buying a battery: focus on Ah and voltage, then convert to Wh.
Buying an inverter: focus on VA, then convert to watts using the power factor.
Checking your bill or solar savings: focus on kWh (units).
Checking wiring or MCBs: focus on amps.
FAQs
What is the difference between amp and Ah?
An amp is the rate of current flow at a moment. An ampere-hour is a quantity of charge: amps multiplied by hours. A battery is rated in Ah; a charger or appliance current is stated in amps.
What is watt vs watt hour in simple words?
Watt is power right now; watt-hour is that power sustained for an hour. A 100W bulb on for 5 hours uses 500 Wh.
How to convert Ah to watts?
You cannot convert directly, because Ah is capacity and watts are power. Multiply Ah by voltage to get watt-hours, then divide by your load in watts to estimate hours of runtime.
Is VA the same as watt?
No. VA is apparent power; watts are real power. For home inverters, real watts are usually 70 to 80% of the VA rating.
What is a unit of electricity?
One unit is one kilowatt-hour, which is 1,000 watts used for one hour. It is the quantity your electricity bill charges for.
How many units does a 150Ah battery store?
About 1.8 units at 12V (12 × 150 = 1,800 Wh). Usable energy is lower after inverter loss and safe cut-off.
Amp vs Ah vs Watt: which matters most when buying an inverter battery?
Ah and voltage together, which give watt-hours. Watts matter for your load, and amps matter for the charger and wiring.
How many amps does a 12V battery supply to a 300W load?
About 25 amps (300 ÷ 12), and slightly more once inverter losses are included. This high current is why inverter battery cables are thick.
Conclusion
Amp vs Ah vs Watt stops being confusing once you hold the water tank picture: amps are flow, Ah is the tank, watts are work done, and watt-hours are the total work the tank can do. Convert everything to watt-hours before comparing batteries, convert VA to watts before choosing an inverter, and you avoid the two mistakes that cost Indian buyers the most.
