What Is Ah in a Battery? Capacity and Backup Explained

What is Ah in a battery? Ah (ampere-hour) is the amount of electric charge a battery can deliver: a 150Ah battery can, in theory, supply 15 amps for 10 hours or 7.5 amps for 20 hours. On its own, Ah does not tell you backup time. Multiply it by the battery voltage to get watt-hours (energy), then account for inverter losses and how deep the battery can safely discharge. Do that, and a 150Ah, 12V inverter battery running a 300W load gives roughly 4 hours, not the 6 hours the simple formula suggests.
That gap between label and reality is what this guide is about. Every number below is worked out step by step so you can repeat it for your own battery.
Ah at a glance
Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
What Ah measures | Charge stored, in amperes multiplied by hours |
What Ah does not measure | Energy, unless you also know the voltage |
Formula for energy | Wh = Volts × Ah |
150Ah, 12V battery energy | 1,800 Wh (1.8 units of electricity) |
Realistic usable share | About 65 to 70% after inverter loss and safe cut-off |
Common home sizes in India | 100Ah to 220Ah, single 12V battery |
Why the same Ah differs by brand | Rating basis: C10 versus C20 |
Ah meaning in battery: the simple version
Ah meaning in battery terms: one ampere-hour is one amp of current flowing for one hour. A battery rated 100Ah can, in principle, deliver 1 amp for 100 hours, 10 amps for 10 hours, or 5 amps for 20 hours.
The "in principle" matters. Lead-acid batteries hold less usable charge when you drain them fast. That is why manufacturers state the discharge time behind the rating. A battery rated at C20 was tested over 20 hours. A C10 rating was tested over 10 hours, which is closer to how an inverter actually uses it. The same physical battery reads higher at C20 than at C10, so a 150Ah C20 label and a 150Ah C10 label are not equal. Our guide to C10 vs C20 battery ratings shows the conversion in detail.
Ah to Wh conversion: turning charge into energy
Ah to Wh conversion is one multiplication:
Wh = Battery voltage × Ah
Battery | Voltage | Ah | Energy (Wh) | Units (kWh) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Bike battery | 12V | 5Ah | 60 Wh | 0.06 |
Small inverter battery | 12V | 100Ah | 1,200 Wh | 1.2 |
Standard home inverter battery | 12V | 150Ah | 1,800 Wh | 1.8 |
Tall tubular battery | 12V | 200Ah | 2,400 Wh | 2.4 |
Two 150Ah batteries (24V system) | 24V | 150Ah | 3,600 Wh | 3.6 |
Notice the last row. Two 150Ah batteries wired in series still read 150Ah, because series wiring raises voltage, not Ah. Energy doubles anyway, because the voltage doubled. This is why comparing Ah across systems of different voltage gives the wrong answer, and why Wh is the honest comparison unit.
How to calculate battery backup: the five-step method
How to calculate battery backup properly takes five steps. We will use a 150Ah, 12V tubular battery and a 300W load (four fans, six LED lights and a Wi-Fi router, as a typical example).
Step 1: Find the energy stored.
12V × 150Ah = 1,800 Wh
Step 2: Subtract inverter conversion loss.
Home inverters convert DC to AC at roughly 80 to 90% efficiency (verify on your inverter's datasheet). Using 85%: 1,800 × 0.85 = 1,530 Wh
Step 3: Subtract the charge the inverter will not let you use.
Inverters cut off at about 10.5V on a 12V battery to protect it. Exide's published Inverterz Star specification, for example, lists a battery low cut-off of 10.5V ±0.2V. At a 300W load, the battery reaches that voltage before every last amp-hour is drawn out. A realistic usable share is about 80%: 1,530 × 0.80 = 1,224 Wh
Step 4: Divide by your load.
1,224 Wh ÷ 300W = about 4.1 hours
Step 5: Apply an age factor.
A battery past its third year may hold 70 to 80% of its original capacity. At 75%, the same setup gives about 3 hours.
The "simple formula" you will see on most pages (Ah × V ÷ load) gives 1,800 ÷ 300 = 6 hours. That is about 45% more backup than a new battery will really deliver, and nearly double what a three-year-old one will.
150ah battery backup time at common loads
Here is 150ah battery backup time across typical Indian household loads, using the realistic method above (new battery, 85% inverter efficiency, 80% usable).
Load | What it typically runs | Simple formula | Realistic (new) | Realistic (3 years old) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
100W | 2 fans, 3 LED lights, router | 18.0 h | 12.2 h | 9.2 h |
200W | 3 fans, 5 lights, TV | 9.0 h | 6.1 h | 4.6 h |
300W | 4 fans, 6 lights, router | 6.0 h | 4.1 h | 3.1 h |
500W | Fans, lights, TV, small cooler | 3.6 h | 2.4 h | 1.8 h |
700W | Heavy load near inverter limit | 2.6 h | 1.7 h | 1.3 h |
One honest caveat: at high loads, lead-acid batteries lose more capacity than this straight-line math shows, because fast discharge pulls voltage down sooner. Real backup at 500W and 700W is often lower still. For UPS-style batteries where this effect is strongest, our VRLA battery backup time calculation uses manufacturer discharge tables instead of a formula.
Does higher Ah mean more backup?
Does higher Ah mean more backup? Yes, at the same voltage, same chemistry and same rating basis. A 200Ah battery stores a third more energy than a 150Ah battery of the same type, so it runs the same load roughly a third longer.
It stops being true in three situations:
Situation | Why higher Ah may not give more backup |
|---|---|
Different rating basis | A 160Ah C20 battery can hold less than a 150Ah C10 battery |
Different chemistry | A 100Ah lithium battery delivers more usable energy than a 150Ah lead-acid battery, because lithium can be discharged deeper |
Inverter cannot charge it | A small inverter's charger may never fully charge a very large battery during short mains hours, so it never reaches its rated Ah |
The third point catches many buyers. If your area gets only 4 to 5 hours of mains supply between cuts, a 220Ah battery on a 10 to 12 amp charger may spend its life partly charged, which shortens it through sulphation.
What is Ah in a battery worth when buying: pros and cons
Buying by Ah alone: what works | What goes wrong |
|---|---|
Easy to compare batteries of the same type and brand | Ignores C10 versus C20 labelling |
Higher Ah does mean more stored charge | Ignores voltage, so mixes up 12V and 24V systems |
A useful first filter on price per Ah | Ignores whether your inverter can charge it |
Ignores real usable share and ageing |
Which Ah is right for you?
Strong fit for 150Ah: a home with 2 to 4 hours of daily cuts, a 200 to 300W essential load, and an 800 to 1,100VA inverter. This is why 150Ah is the most common inverter battery size in India. Typical prices are covered in our 150Ah inverter battery price guide.
Marginal fit: long evening cuts of 5 hours or more with a 300W load. Consider 200Ah, or two batteries on a 24V inverter, but check the charger current first.
Not a fit: running an AC, a geyser or a motor pump on a single 12V battery. The Ah needed is impractical; size the system properly or look at solar with storage.
FAQs
What is Ah in battery terms, in one line?
Ah (ampere-hour) is the charge a battery can deliver: amps multiplied by hours. A 100Ah battery can deliver 10 amps for about 10 hours under its rated test conditions.
What is the Ah meaning in battery labels like 150Ah C10?
150Ah is the capacity and C10 is the test condition: the battery delivered 150Ah when discharged over 10 hours. The same battery tested at C20 would show a higher number.
How do I convert Ah to Wh?
Multiply Ah by battery voltage. A 12V, 150Ah battery stores 12 × 150 = 1,800 Wh, or 1.8 units of electricity.
What is the real 150Ah battery backup time for 300W?
About 4 hours on a new battery, after inverter loss and the low-voltage cut-off. The simple formula says 6 hours, which overstates it. An older battery may give closer to 3 hours.
Does higher Ah mean more backup?
Yes, if voltage, chemistry and rating basis are the same. Across different chemistries or C10 versus C20 labels, a higher Ah figure can still hold less usable energy.
How to calculate battery backup at home?
Multiply Ah by voltage, then by about 0.85 for inverter loss and 0.8 for usable charge, then divide by your load in watts. The answer is backup in hours.
Is 150Ah enough for a home inverter?
For most homes running fans, lights and a TV during 2 to 4 hour cuts, yes. For longer cuts or loads above 300W, look at 200Ah or a two-battery system.
Why does my battery give less backup than the Ah rating promised?
Usually a mix of inverter loss, the low-voltage cut-off, battery age and a C20 label. A battery that gives less than half its expected backup after a full charge should be tested.
Conclusion
What is Ah in a battery? It is the charge the battery can hold, and it is only the starting point. Multiply by voltage to get energy, take off about 15% for the inverter and 20% for safe cut-off, and divide by your real load. That gives a backup figure you can plan around instead of one that disappoints in the first long power cut.
