A 1kVA UPS does not deliver 1,000 watts. It delivers 600W to 800W depending on its power factor, and the difference between those two figures decides whether your equipment runs or the unit trips. Beyond that, "1kVA UPS" is used in India for three genuinely different products at three very different prices: an offline desktop UPS at around Rs 5,000, a line-interactive unit at around Rs 9,000, and a true double-conversion online UPS at Rs 16,000 to Rs 22,000 before batteries. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category, and the listings rarely make the distinction obvious.

What does 1kVA actually mean, and how many watts is a 1kVA UPS?
kVA measures apparent power. Watts measure real power. The ratio between them is the power factor, and a UPS is rated in kVA because the manufacturer does not know what kind of load you will connect.
A 1kVA UPS supplies 800W if it is rated at 0.8 power factor and 600W if it is rated at 0.6. Older and cheaper units are often 0.6; modern online units are typically 0.8, and some premium models reach 0.9.

Bottom line: compare UPS units on watts, not on the kVA label. Two units both marked 1kVA can differ by 200W of usable output, which is the difference between running a workstation with two monitors and not running it.
Size on 70 to 80% of the UPS wattage, never 100%. A UPS run permanently at full rating runs hot, ages its batteries faster and has no headroom for start-up surge.

What is the difference between a 1kva ups and a 1kVA home inverter?
They look similar, are priced in overlapping ranges, and do fundamentally different jobs. This confusion sends more people to the wrong product than any other in Indian power backup, so it is worth resolving before you spend anything.

The practical rule: if a 15 millisecond interruption would cost you something, buy an online UPS. If it would merely be annoying, buy an inverter. A desktop PC survives an inverter changeover most of the time. A server mid-write, a CNC controller, or a diagnostic machine may not.
Most people who search for a 1kVA UPS for their home actually want the second column. If that describes you, the relevant products are lead acid inverters and batteries or lithium inverters and batteries, and you will get hours of backup for what a UPS gives you in minutes. Note the running cost point, which sellers rarely mention. An online UPS double-converts continuously, so it draws a small overhead around the clock even when mains is healthy. At roughly 90% efficiency on a 300W load, that is about 33W of continuous loss, or 24 units a month, roughly Rs 190 at Rs 8 per unit. That is the price of zero-gap power, and it is the correct price to pay when downtime is expensive and the wrong price to pay when it is not.

A point in favour of line-interactive units that is often missed: in areas with frequent voltage sag, an offline UPS switches to battery every time voltage dips, cycling the battery dozens of times a day and killing it within a year. A line-interactive unit corrects the sag without touching the battery. In much of semi-urban India, that alone justifies the price step.
How long will a 1kVA UPS run during a power cut?
Depends entirely on the battery configuration, and this is the number that determines the real total cost.
Internal battery math. A typical 1kVA online UPS with two 12V 7Ah internal batteries holds 168 Wh nominal. Sealed VRLA batteries should not go below roughly 50% depth regularly, and inverter conversion takes another 12%, so about 74 Wh reaches the load.
