Are LED headlights legal in India?
This is the question the price pages skip, and the answer is more restrictive than most buyers expect.
LED headlights are legal in India when factory-fitted as part of the vehicle's original ARAI-certified specification, or when aftermarket units carry explicit ARAI AIS-034 type approval for your specific vehicle application and are installed with professional beam alignment.
Outside those two cases, retrofitting creates two separate problems:
The certification problem. Replacing your vehicle's lighting specification from halogen to LED without RTO approval is a modification that departs from the type approval the vehicle was certified against. Generic kits sold online without AIS-034 approval for your specific application are non-compliant from the moment they are installed.
The optics problem, which is the real safety issue. A halogen reflector is shaped around a 360-degree glowing filament. An LED chip emits directionally from a flat surface. Put one in the other and the reflector cannot focus it, so light scatters upward and sideways: into trees, signboards and oncoming drivers' eyes, and not onto the road. You get less usable light and more glare, which is the worst possible combination.

Bottom line: the fine is not the main risk. The main risk is that badly scattered light genuinely reduces what you can see while blinding the person coming toward you.
How to upgrade your lighting without breaking the law
- Check your housing type first. A projector housing with a proper cut-off shield can handle an LED source. A reflector housing generally cannot. This single check decides whether an upgrade is viable at all.
- If you have a reflector housing, upgrade the halogen instead. High-performance halogen bulbs within the 70W limit are fully legal and give a genuine improvement over a tired standard bulb.
- If you retrofit LED, insist on AIS-034 type approval for your specific vehicle application, in writing, and keep the documentation in the vehicle.
- Choose 4300K to 5000K, not 6000K-plus. Warm and pure white penetrate rain and fog better. Blue-white looks brighter to you and performs worse on a wet road.
- Never modify the housing or wiring. Use plug-and-play units matched to the original socket.
- Get the beam professionally aligned after fitting, and check the cut-off line against a wall at the correct distance.
- Mount auxiliary lights low and aim them down. Fog lamps belong below the main beam, aimed below the cut-off.
When the problem is not the light
A specific and common scenario worth separating out: if your bike or car lights are dim, flickering, or dimming at idle, fitting brighter LEDs will not fix it and may make it worse. Those are electrical system symptoms, usually a weak battery, a failing alternator or regulator, or a poor earth connection.

- Cooling fans fail. Many kits use a small fan in the bulb base; when it fails, the LED derates or dies.
- Canbus errors on modern cars. LEDs draw less than halogens, so the car reports a bulb failure and may flicker or fault.
- Insurance and fitness complications. An undeclared lighting modification can complicate a claim or an FC inspection.
