Why Do LED Lights Flicker? 7 Causes and Fixes

Why do LED lights flicker? In most Indian homes, the cause is one of seven things: a cheap driver inside the bulb, an inverter with a square-wave output, a dimmer or fan regulator on a non-dimmable bulb, a loose connection, voltage fluctuation, a lit switch or wiring fault that leaks current, or a driver that is overheating at the end of its life. The LED chip itself almost never causes the flicker. The small circuit that converts 230V AC into low-voltage DC for the chip is usually to blame, so most fixes cost between nothing and the price of one good bulb.
At a glance
What you see | Most likely cause | Cost to fix |
|---|---|---|
Flicker only during power cuts | Square-wave or modified sine wave inverter | ₹0 (live with it) to a new pure sine wave inverter |
One bulb flickers, others are fine | Cheap or failing driver in that bulb | Price of one bulb |
Faint glow or blinking when switch is OFF | Lit switch, leakage current or switch on neutral | Electrician visit |
Flicker when the fridge, pump or AC starts | Voltage dip on the line | Stabiliser or wiring check |
Flicker on a dimmer or fan-regulator circuit | Non-dimmable bulb | Swap bulb or remove regulator |
Flicker after the bulb has run for 30 minutes | Driver overheating | Replace bulb, improve ventilation |
Several lights flicker together | Loose neutral or main connection | Electrician, urgently |
Why do LEDs flicker? The physics in one minute
Indian mains supply alternates at 50 Hz. A simple LED driver rectifies that into pulsing DC, which rises and falls twice per cycle, so the light can pulse 100 times a second. Good drivers smooth this with a proper capacitor and constant-current circuit, so the output is nearly flat. Cheap drivers, especially the "capacitor dropper" type found in many low-priced bulbs, do very little smoothing, so the light actually dims and brightens 100 times a second.
At 100 Hz, most people do not consciously see the flicker, but the brain can still register it. The IEEE 1789 recommended practice, summarised by the US Department of Energy, sets a low-risk limit of flicker frequency × 0.08. At 100 Hz that works out to 8% modulation. Its listed effects of excessive flicker include headaches, eyestrain, fatigue and, in sensitive people, seizures.
The phone test: open your phone camera in slow-motion or video mode and point it at the bulb. Dark bands rolling across the screen mean the light is pulsing. A clean, even image means the driver is smoothing properly. This free test separates a "good bulb, bad supply" problem from a "bad bulb" problem in ten seconds.
Why do LED lights flicker? The 7 causes in detail
1. A cheap driver inside the bulb
Bulbs sold at the lowest prices save money on the driver. A capacitor-dropper design has no real current regulation, so any small change in mains voltage shows up directly as a change in brightness. If one bulb flickers and an identical-looking bulb from another brand on the same circuit does not, this is your answer. Check for the BIS standard mark when you buy: LED lamps sold in India fall under compulsory BIS certification (verify the current IS number and order at publish). For price ranges by type, see our LED light price guide.
2. A square-wave or modified sine wave inverter
This is the cause most flicker articles miss, and it is very common in India. If your LEDs are steady on mains but flicker, buzz or dim during power cuts, your inverter is producing a stepped or square wave instead of a smooth sine wave. LED drivers are designed for a sine wave. A square wave feeds them sharp voltage edges that the driver cannot smooth properly.
Inverter output | What LEDs do on backup | What else it affects |
|---|---|---|
Pure sine wave | Steady light, same as mains | Fans run quietly, no extra heating |
Modified (quasi) sine wave | Possible flicker, hum or slight dimming | Fans hum, some chargers run warm |
Square wave | Frequent flicker, shorter driver life | Not suitable for most modern electronics |
A second inverter effect is the changeover blink. When mains fails, the inverter takes a few milliseconds to take over. In UPS mode the switch is faster than in normal (appliance) mode, which is why computers and LEDs blink less in UPS mode. Our guide to UPS mode in an inverter explains the setting.
3. A dimmer or fan regulator on a non-dimmable bulb
Most household LED bulbs are non-dimmable. Put one on a dimmer, or on a circuit wired through an old fan-style regulator, and the driver receives a chopped waveform it was never designed for. The result is flicker at low settings, buzzing, and early failure. Fix: either use a bulb marked "dimmable" with a compatible LED dimmer, or remove the regulator.
4. A loose connection
A loose holder contact, a worn B22 pin holder, or a loose wire at the switch makes the circuit open and close in tiny intervals. The light flickers irregularly, often when someone walks past or a door closes. If several lights in different rooms flicker together, suspect a loose neutral at the distribution board. That is a safety issue, so call an electrician the same day.
5. Voltage fluctuation
When a heavy load such as a refrigerator compressor, water pump or AC starts, line voltage dips for a moment. Good drivers ride through it. Weak drivers pass the dip straight to the LEDs. If the flicker matches appliances starting, read our guide to power fluctuation causes and fixes.
6. Ghosting: glow or blinking when the switch is OFF
A faint glow or a blink every few seconds with the switch off means a small current is still reaching the bulb. Common causes are a switch with a built-in indicator lamp, the switch being wired on the neutral instead of the phase, or induced voltage on long cable runs. The driver capacitor charges slowly, then flashes. Fix: replace the illuminated switch, or have the switch moved to the phase wire. Proper earthing also matters here.
7. Driver overheating or end of life
If a bulb is fine when first switched on but starts flickering after 20 to 40 minutes, the driver is overheating. This happens in enclosed fittings, upside-down in hot ceilings, or simply because the capacitor has aged. Once a driver starts doing this, it rarely recovers. Replace the bulb and, where possible, use a fitting with ventilation.
How to diagnose LED flicker in 5 minutes
Step | Test | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Does it flicker only on inverter power? | Cause 2 (inverter waveform) | Go to step 2 |
2 | Does swapping in a different brand of bulb stop it? | Cause 1 or 7 (bulb driver) | Go to step 3 |
3 | Is there a dimmer or regulator on the circuit? | Cause 3 | Go to step 4 |
4 | Does it flicker when switched off? | Cause 6 | Go to step 5 |
5 | Does it flicker when a big appliance starts? | Cause 5 | Cause 4: check connections |
Is LED flicker dangerous?
Flicker you can see is a warning sign in two ways. First, for health: the IEEE 1789 risks above apply most to children, people with migraine and anyone with photosensitive epilepsy, and they apply even to flicker you cannot consciously see. Second, for wiring: irregular flicker across multiple lights points to a loose connection that can heat up. A single cheap bulb flickering is mostly a comfort problem. Several lights flickering together is a safety problem.
Honest trade-offs: what fixing flicker costs
Fix | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
Buy a better bulb | Cheapest fix, solves causes 1 and 7 | Better drivers cost more per bulb; there is no simple label for flicker on Indian packaging |
Switch inverter to UPS mode | Free, reduces changeover blink | Charges the battery harder and can shorten backup slightly; check the manual |
Upgrade to a pure sine wave inverter | Fixes cause 2 for every appliance | The largest cost on this list; only worth it if your current inverter is due for replacement |
Stabiliser on the main line | Helps cause 5 | Does not fix bad bulbs or wiring faults |
Electrician visit | Fixes causes 4 and 6 properly | Call-out charge; worth it if multiple lights flicker |
Who should act now, and who can wait
- Act now (strong fit for a fix): several lights flicker together, any flicker with a burning smell, warm switch plates, or a family member who gets headaches or has epilepsy.
- Fix when convenient (marginal): one cheap bulb flickers, or flicker only during a short power cut on an older square-wave inverter.
- Leave it (not worth fixing): a brief blink at the moment of inverter changeover in normal mode. That is expected behaviour, not a fault.
If you are replacing the inverter anyway, choose pure sine wave, and use our inverter load calculation guide to size it. LED lights are among the lightest loads in the house, so a few extra bulbs barely change the size you need.
Conclusion
Why do LED lights flicker? Because the driver that converts 230V AC to DC is either too cheap to smooth the 100 Hz ripple, being fed a poor waveform by a square-wave inverter or dimmer, or receiving an unstable supply through loose wiring or voltage dips. Use the phone camera test and the five-step table to find which one, fix the cheap causes first, and call an electrician without delay if multiple lights flicker together. For flicker-free backup, pair good bulbs from the Adwin LED lighting range with a pure sine wave inverter.
FAQs
Why do LED lights flicker only during power cuts?
Your inverter is likely producing a square wave or modified sine wave, which LED drivers cannot smooth properly. A brief blink at the moment of changeover is also normal, especially in normal mode. Switching to UPS mode reduces the blink, and a pure sine wave inverter removes waveform flicker.
Why do LEDs flicker when switched off?
A small current is still reaching the bulb, usually through an illuminated switch, a switch wired on the neutral, or induced voltage in long wiring. The driver capacitor slowly charges and then flashes. Replacing the lit switch or rewiring the switch to the phase fixes it.
Can a flickering LED bulb cause a fire?
A single flickering bulb with a failing driver rarely causes a fire, but it should be replaced. Flicker caused by a loose connection is more serious, because loose terminals heat up. If you notice a burning smell or a warm switch, turn off the circuit and call an electrician.
Is LED flicker bad for your eyes?
It can be. The IEEE 1789 recommended practice links excessive flicker to eyestrain, headaches and fatigue, even when the flicker is too fast to see. Use the phone camera test and replace bulbs that show heavy banding, especially in study rooms and children's rooms.
Why do LED lights flicker when the fridge or motor starts?
Large motors pull a high current at start-up, which briefly drops the voltage on your line. A good LED driver rides through the dip, but a weak one passes it straight to the light. A stabiliser, a separate circuit for the motor, or better bulbs will fix it.
Will a voltage stabiliser stop LED flicker?
Only if the cause is voltage fluctuation. A stabiliser does not fix a cheap driver, a dimmer mismatch, an inverter waveform problem or a loose connection. Diagnose the cause first with the five-step table before spending on a stabiliser.
How do I stop LED tube lights from flickering?
If the tube is a retrofit installed in an old fitting, the old choke or starter may still be in the circuit and causing flicker. Remove or bypass them as the tube's instructions specify, or replace the fitting with an integrated LED batten. Check the holder contacts for looseness too.
Do all LED bulbs flicker on a square wave inverter?
Not all, but many budget bulbs do. Bulbs with better drivers tolerate a modified sine wave more gracefully, though a pure sine wave inverter is the only reliable fix. Testing one bulb from each brand on backup power will show which ones cope.
